Dragon Business

I have wanted to tackle this topic for some time now, but it really requires so much back story that I’ve found it immensely off putting. But, these things don’t write themselves, so I am going to make a serious attempt, while trying to go light on the back story, because of time and my attention span.

So, I am the rebirth of a dragon-child who lived a long time ago in another realm.  Almost all of my dragon Clan was annihilated after a sordid chain of events that I’m not even going to touch here.  Later, I was murdered by a jealous relative from the Other side of my Family. This is important for you to know because those are the reasons why I am who I am, and where I am, in this realm and time period.

The other things you should know are that the realm my Clan is from is one with a long history which includes multiple species that evolved from a common ancestor, two of which were and are the dominant two species in the realm.  These two related dragon species claimed about half of the realm’s land and resources each.  Let’s call them Species A, and Species B.

Species A are bipeds.  They have a fairly humanoid shape and developed advanced technology in their realm, including the manipulation of DNA.  Species B are what one would commonly think of when pondering dragons– large, serpentine, intelligent.  The cultures of these two species could not have been farther removed.  Species A were conquerors.  Species B preferred a wild existence.  Wherever they met, they clashed.

Eventually, Species A gained the technological edge in these skirmishes, and went on to enslave great numbers of Species B, using them as beasts of burden, or as weapons.

During their enslavement, some members of Species B were experimented upon, genetically, having many physical traits of Species A impressed upon them to make their servitude less cumbersome within the architectural structures of their oppressors.  Very few were altered, and bred for this purpose.

After some generations of this “house-slavery”, a revolution was sparked by a dragon named *Swvhrnn (pronounced Soo-ver-EEn), who was an unaltered slave.  Inspired by the spirit who would become the Patroness of my Clan and chief Goddess of the realm, the White Dove, Swvhrnn convinced a prominent “house-slave”, whose name is lost to history, to lead the other “house-slaves” in revolt, joining their brethren in the taking of the capitol city.  The leaders of Species A were murdered by the “house-slaves”, and at the instruction of the White Dove, the first Clans were formed.

The “house-slaves”, and many of the original non-altered revolutionaries became the first dragons of my Clan.  During the reformation, in order to prevent the total destruction of Species A’s culture, and thus a prolonged conflict, the White Dove decreed that the cleanest way to subjugate the remaining dissidents of Species A, was to install one Clan to rule over all the Clans of both Species.  As I’m sure you’ve guessed, the White Dove chose my Clan, and we’ve ruled the realm ever since, saving for the time period after our annihilation and before my rebirth.

And there’s the back story.  What I do for the Clan now is preserve the cultures of both Species A and B, as taught to me by the Ancestors, and by their living descendants.  I learn the history by listening and recording it by hand for future generations.  I also preside over the rituals for the White Dove, embodying Her when necessary.  In this realm, She has a manifestation who answers to the name Columbia (Columba – the White Dove), Goddess of Freedom– and so, I am called Columbine.

Because of my ancestral history, dragon and human, I can not abide slavery.  Neither can the White Dove/Columbia.  In every realm I visit, I spread Her ideals of civil liberty whenever I am afforded the opportunity.  Even in our own realm my people are not forced to swear fealty, but the Clans have come and done so of their own volition.  They desire to be united under the auspices of the White Dove, the Great Liberator.

In addition to those things already mentioned, my other chief concern is securing a living for my people.  That means brokering treaties and trade agreements between Clans, and between our realm and Other realms.  It means being a strong force politically, and remaining useful to my Father, Zeus, to whom I have sworn fealty.

Our Clan also had an important job to do concerning the wellbeing of Olympos, and eventually we will resume those duties.  But as of now, our focus must be on regaining strength, so that we may perform our duties properly, when the time comes.

Now, I realize that I haven’t been too terribly specific regarding my duties, but as I’m sure you can imagine, much of it involves private Clan secrets that I am not at liberty to divulge.  That I was given permission to share this much is extraordinary.

I also don’t know if other dragon Clans, from different realms, are in any way similar to my own, but frankly, that is irrelevant.  Nothing about me, what I do, what I was made for, or my Family, is very similar to anyone else’s experience.  And that is just fine.

*I realize that this spelling makes absolutely no sense using English letters, but the Storykeeper was very insistent on this spelling in English.  It is not my place to correct the Storykeeper.  I am sure he has his reasons.


The Land of Two Rivers, and Beyond

Blood and rain.  Fish and rivers, and the sea.  Bobcats and javelinas.   Nereids and hamadryads.  Mesquite wood and fire ants.  Feral cats and grackles.  Sunshine and sea winds.  Peaches and figs, and cicadas. Dead soldiers and Spanish missions.  Sand dollars and jellyfish.  Live oaks and palm trees.  Foxes and road runners, and rattlesnakes.

These are the jewels of my path, local to South Texas.  This is my home, and these are my allies.

My path is a local one, where I concentrate on the needs of the lives lived around me.  When I offer to the sea, it is on behalf of the humans here who know not the price for the bounty they take.  It is to give thanks, and to celebrate the creatures and spirits who dwell here, those who make it possible for us to make a living here.

When I raise my arms to the Theoi it is in acknowledgment of the great tapestry They have woven around me; to celebrate Them and to honor Them, and to remind myself of all They hold dear.  This place is alive.  I am alive.  And we are paired to live our lives together.

When I pour wine and blood onto the Earth, it is so the grain and corn will thrive.  When I go to pick cotton out of its rugged husk, it is to feel what my ancestors felt, and to leave bits of myself in the field so they are not alone, and not forgotten.  When I pick flowers for offerings, it is to remind myself of the beautiful things which were plucked, in their ripeness and in their prime, all for the sake of a world gone by.

Those times that I stood upon the widow’s walk of the white mansion, it was to tell the spirits of my people, “I see you.  I remember you.  The masters are gone, and I am here.”

And when I give milk, now even the milk of my own body, it is to assure the Land that I will nourish it, as it nourishes me and mine.  Because I am the Land.  I am the Rivers.  I am the Sea and the Wind.

When I leave seed for the grackles, I know they are my brothers.  When I leave meat for the night creatures, I know they are my sisters.  When I fill the hummingbird feeders, and see the shrimp plants bloom, I know that my family is welcomed.  We are the spirits of the Land, and we rely on one another.

When I wade in the salt water, I know that I am purified.  And when I call to the Gods, I know that They are listening.  Poseidon.  Amphitrite.  Apollon.  Ares.  Zeus.  And Others still.  They hear me.  They know me.  They favor me and mine.

And when I take my children to greet Them upon the sparkling sea water, I feel Their many blessings, and Their encouragement, as surely as I feel the wind blow.  As long as we do our part to honor the Gods, the spirits, the Land, the Rivers, the Sea and the Wind, They will do Their part to keep us safe and fed.  Together, we are the reciprocal bond.  We are kharis.  We are life.  We are this world.

We are the Land of Two Rivers, and beyond.

The Dead Are Not Silent

Hello, everyone.  I am still not really in a position answer any correspondence, which includes comments for this post, but I find myself temporarily with internet service during this tumultuous time, so I thought I would type up a little something that has been brewing in my mind for a while. I will be back less sporadically after a few more days, I hope.  :)


It is March, and during this month, in addition to the many purification festivals I’ll be trying to observe, of which there are more now due to consolidation of the Treasury’s calendar, I will also be celebrating the lives and deaths of persons who have become very important to me and my spiritual practice.  The first to be recognized in March, at least this year, was Saint Katherine Drexel, whose feast day in the Catholic tradition was yesterday, March 3rd.

Saint Drexel was the second American born Saint to the canonized, which was completed October 1st, in the year 2000, by Pope John Paul II.  I do not have much love for most in the Catholic tradition, however Saint Drexel is a important exception for me.  This is the first year she’ll have been talked about and celebrated by my family, but certainly will not be the last.

As a socialite in 1800’s Philadelphia, no one expected her to enter a religious order, but she did not allow those opinions to sway her from her mission to better the lives and conditions of the indigenous American, and Black American populations.  Her entire life was spent for the betterment of these disenfranchised peoples, while using her considerable inheritance to build schools, missions and churches for the least cared for peoples in the country. From her, I’ve learned that it is possible to devote oneself to the unceasing calling of one’s God, and that it is possible to make a difference in the lives of the poor and dispossessed.  I do not have to be a Catholic to understand and appreciate the impact of Saint Drexel’s legacy on American society.

The second person to be honored in March will be the philosopher and mathematician, Hypatia of Alexandria, who was murdered by a Christian mob on March 8th, 415 A.D., in Alexandria, Egypt, after much civil unrest and bloody attacks by feuding Jewish and Christian citizens of Alexandria.

Hypatia’s only crime was to be a learned woman of Pagan leanings in a city where the Jewish and Christian peoples were at each other’s throats.  After much back and forth between the two warring sects, and after being accused of influencing one of the leaders of this feud, Hypatia was kidnapped, beaten, stripped naked, flayed with oyster shells while still alive, dismembered, and finally burned.  And though her death was brutal and unforgivable, Hypatia’s legacy of philosophy, astronomy and higher mathematics lives on today in those who remember and honor her, as well as those who follow in her footsteps, especially women.

What I have learned from her personally, is that no matter what one does or doesn’t do, knowing and being oneself is most important, simply because we can not always sway the minds of others.  The world is a dangerous place, and sometimes we will be targeted for our beliefs, or for political reasons, but we must not allow fear to silence us, not even the fear of pain or death.

Near the end of March, I will celebrate the life and death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth I, of England, whose date of death was March 24th, 1603. Queen Elizabeth is widely regarded as one of the most successful monarchs in English history, having presided over what is often now called the Golden Age.

After much contention and religious strife in the country during the reigns of her half-siblings, King Edward VI and Queen Mary I, the succession of Elizabeth was a welcome opportunity for change.  Through her moderate rule, Elizabeth was able to quiet the civil unrest that had long plagued her people, though these reforms were not without risk to her life and person. She was targeted several times by plots to return England to the control of the Roman Catholic Church, especially after Pope Pius V’s papal bull in the year 1570, which released all Catholic citizens of England from allegiance to their Sovereign.

But, as history tells us, Queen Elizabeth was ultimately victorious in winning the hearts and minds of her people.  The lessons I take from this, are that striving for the middle way is oftentimes the most desirable course, when in fact one’s goal is to reconcile disparate factions.  Compromise can lead not only to the coming together of things once thought irreconcilable, but also to the growth and maturation of newborn respect for one another’s differences.

So, there you have it; all those whom I will have celebrated, or will be celebrating, during this month of March, 2015.  May the many Gods and spirits, especially those of our honored dead be remembered, and may they continue to observe our trials and accomplishments for the betterment of our world and societies.

Hail to the Deathless Gods!  Hail to the Beloved Dead, and may they, and we, never be silent!

Who Remembers the Forgotten Dead?

Taking the question at face value, it would seem that no one remembers the forgotten ones.  They pass into obscurity after their loved-ones die off themselves, or move on to other communities.  If they were members of a marginalized group, they may even be discarded, while in the grave, by whatever community remains around them.

I bring this to your attention, because I’ve recently been made aware of a little-known old slave and freedmen’s cemetery near to my city.  It’s closed off, and the buildings are sealed, however, an historical marker has been placed there, and the grounds are kept mowed.  But, no one visits the many, many (estimated 2000) unmarked graves.  Only six of the graves have markers, and two of those are of unknown individuals.

How terribly sad.  All those people, those families, generations of families, buried there without even their names.  And, of course, there are condos built over a section of the original site.  It just makes my heart quake with grief and anger.  So, I’m going to pay a visit to the cemetery, spend some time there just remembering those who have no one left to remember, and making offerings.

I wish I could have found an account from one of the people in the local cemetery, however, I could not, so instead I share with you an excerpt from the narrative of Mr. William Adams, of Texas, aged ninety-three years, born into slavery:

“Yous want to know and talk about de power de people tells you I has. Well, sit down here, right there in dat chair, befo’ we’uns starts. I gits some ice water and den we’uns can discuss de subject. I wants to ‘splain it clearly, so yous can understand.

“I’s born a slave, 93 years ago, so of course I ‘members de war period. Like all de other slaves I has no chance for edumacation. Three months am de total time I’s spent going to school. I teached myself to read and write. I’s anxious to larn to read so I could study and find out about many things. Dat, I has done.

“There am lots of folks, and edumacated ones, too, what says we’uns believes in superstition. Well, its ’cause dey don’t understand. ‘Member de Lawd, in some of His ways, can be mysterious. De Bible says so. There am some things de Lawd wants all folks to know, some things jus’ de chosen few to know, and some things no one should know. Now, jus’ ’cause yous don’t know ’bout some of de Lawd’s laws, ‘taint superstition if some other person understands and believes in sich.

“There is some born to sing, some born to preach, and some born to know de signs. There is some born under de power of de devil and have de power to put injury and misery on people, and some born under de power of de Lawd for to do good and overcome de evil power. Now, dat produces two forces, like fire and water. De evil forces starts de fire and I has de water force to put de fire out…”

I think it is important that we remember our Dead.  All of our Dead. Especially those who are often left out of the official history.

November, November

I honor my spiritual Ancestors on the first day of the year, every year. All those who have lived before, yet are not a part of my biological family tree.  Chiefest among these are the priestesses of Delphi.  This was the second year in which I honored them on the first of November, and I am still only becoming acquainted with them, so there hasn’t been much more than a brief acknowledgment of my existence, followed by their accepting of my offerings.  Being in their presence is always humbling.  The sensation that came over me at their arrival was physically overwhelming, to the point of being unpleasant, and it only lifted completely after each of the three offerings were presented to the priestesses. They also had a very succinct message for me this year, which I am taking to heart.

Afterward, I did a fair bit of divining for myself, mostly inquiring about my past, and related subjects. Now, with the coming of the New Year, and the conclusion of two months of important rituals, I may relax a bit and dive into that much welcomed (and needed) period of Winter introspection. So, you can expect less blogging from me from now until Winter Solstice, or secular new year. I’ve a lot of thinking, learning and growing to do.

As far as my divination is concerned, I’ll be cutting one session out each month until the rest period ends, so there will be one session for November, one for December, and one for January. Bimonthly divination will resume in either February or March.

Also, anyone seeking Intercession with Lord Apollon may contact me directly via email (no need to coment here) to explain your need. I take this service very seriously, and will only do it if you convince me that it is truly needed. I will be open for intercession until the end of January, but please note, this is a very personal form of prayer. If I intercede on your behalf, I will not be able to divine for you until three months pass after the last intercession. Intercession requires a depth of emotion (in my practice), while divination requires that I remain emotionally distant. There would be a massive conflict of interest, so I’ll update my services page to reflect these changes, as soon as it is convenient for me to do so.

I’m really happy about the way things are going in my life right now. I’m going to enjoy this resting and thinking time, and take it as the wonderful gift that it is. And, if I manage to squeeze out enough time, I may even finish that post about Hyperborea I’ve been writing for the Treasury of Apollon.

And now, I have to laugh at myself, because, even as I throw off some Work for the Winter, different (more) Work gets piled on. I am a strange creature. But then, aren’t most of us religious types?
