The Rage of Demeter

© Columbine 2017

O child, sweet child, where have you gone?  Who has taken my Daughter from me?  This pain in my bosom has left me forlorn!  My eyes search, but they do not see!

IIIIEEEE!  I howl into darkness!  Into light!  Fierce, in the faces of All who deny the great Kosmic injustice done in their sight!

Where are you, O child?  Who has snatched you away?  Dare they come face me, to the Moirai, I pray!  And over these lands, these streams, fallow grounds– I will traverse until you are found!

Blessed Daughter, fear not!  This Earth, it shall suffer!  There is no reprieve from unending winter!  My tears, they fall, but cold are they now!  Such icy despair, causing death all around!

And lo, Great Helios, sun in the sky, has shown me the truth of your perilous plight!  To Zeus do I wail now– to burden, to shame– for trading your life for political aims!

Zeus!  Hear me!  I know the plan you have hidden from view!  I demand her return, now, from that one so uncouth!  Brother I did call him before, but never again!  On my life, it is sworn!

Wise you may be, and strong, and feared, but a Mother fears nothing above her own Daughter’s tears!  My child, my Kore, how she must weep in the dark Underworld, kept at vile Hades’ feet!

I will hear no more!  I will not be swayed!  You will have her sent here without delay!  And, to be clear, should your messenger fail, there will be consequence; naught shall survive this absence of my providence!

Reason!  O reason!  Seen by one I despised!  Zeus, perhaps I was harsh in my treatment!  Now, as the Swift One delivers my prize, I at last see through my stony bereavement!  Soon, my Kore returns to the land!  Then all shall be well, and warm again!

O child, sweet child!  Come here to my arms!  What’s this?  You say you have not been wronged?  How can this be, sweet Daughter of mine?  You willingly let yourself be entwined?

You have eaten the fruit of marriage, you say?  And can not deny the part you have played?  To bind yourself to the realm of the dead, you partook of the ritual and are glad to be wed?

Choice, you do call it, but rape is the word!  You were stolen out right!  No explanation was heard!  Your Father, and Uncle, they schemed and forthwith, you were drawn into Earth through a cavernous rift!

I will not stand for this outcome!  You know not your mind!  Child, denounce complicity in this crime!  State it now that under duress you were forced to comply with your captor’s requests!

Please, Zeus, you must intervene, and stop our Daughter becoming His Queen!  Yes, I know you arranged it, but surely you’ll find that pity upon me is called for this time!

Wait!  How many seeds did she eat?  If not the whole fruit perhaps we may entreat Hades, our Brother, to do the right thing, and allow my dear Kore to return in the spring!

Three seeds from the fruit of the pomegranate?  This is grave news, indeed, yet I’ll no longer panic!  For the months of winter she will go to her throne, and the rest of the year, will return to her home!

O child!  Sweet child, remember your Mother!  I will pine for your loss through all of my days!  And know in your heart that there be no other, whose love for you will never decay!

Ode to Thirteen Goddesses ver. 2

Lovely Persephone, ruling over the hosts of Hades
You bring solace, both above and below
Assuaging the barrenness of Winter, Death and Time

Indomitable Rhea, in the face of all adversity You smile
For You are the Lioness, whose prowess is known
In the hearts of those who labor on

Shimmering Amphitrite, Lady resting upon the waves
Your gentle motions ease our hearts
While warning of the dangers of the deep
That we may honor the division of Land and Sea

Wild Artemis, running along rivers
Protectress and Huntress of beasts
We honor Your fierce glory
And stand awed by the might of Your Bow

Indelible Ariadne, Lover of Madness, Speaker of Truth
Your lessons are those we find within us
Of Will, and Wisdom, and love’s fickle moods

All-encompassing Gaea, O vastness of Earth
Who is at once Mother and Grandmother
Eternal Creatrix, we praise You
And embrace You at our end

Luminous Hekate, Light at the Crossroads
Tending the unwelcome spirits
Even these have purpose among Your retinue
As we hail them in passing

Compassionate Athena, Lady favoring strategy over brute force
We are the wheels You set in motion
And by our hands is the Divine Work done

Warlike Aphrodite, bane of hearts and Mistress of cruel Ares
You tempt even the strongest of mortals
And Yours is the triumph of procreation

Beloved Hestia, consumed in the flame of enlightenment
Yours is the way of the Unfettered Self
We are but fleeting in the face of Your truth

Illustrious Hera, Queen of Gods, tester of men
Your trials forge character and train resolve
For ego falls away, as Your gaze falls upon us

Resplendent Leto, She of Untamed Spirit
Woe be upon the boasters and fakers
Who with scornful tongues
Will know the peace of Your Offspring

Bountiful Demeter, by whose power Earth’s sustenance is grown
Your gentle hand did guide us in first planting
Thus laying the seeds of civilization for all humankind

Blessed are the Goddesses!  Hail these Magnificent Thirteen!

Telling and Retelling: The Gift

© Columbine 2017

Prometheus peered sullenly through the clouds which obscured His sight, and that of the other Theoi, from the grim reality of the beasts of the Earth. Below the Blessed Gods, all the animals roamed, each with their respective gifts, to allow them the best chances for survival upon Gaea’s breast.

Each creature had its specialty. There were those which flew through the skies, with their hollow bones and feathered bodies; and there were those that swam beneath the many waters, aided by sleek scales and powerful fins. The beasts which roamed the land were of great variety, many with hooves for running, and others with great claws for climbing or rending flesh from bone. Still many were blessed with fangs sharp as swords.

And then, there was a curious race. A race of beasts which had no such magnificent attributes, save for maybe their intelligence. However, intelligence would not save them from the other beasts, who all had much more formidable gifts…..

Gratitude Project 2017, Day 7 – Demeter

All praise to Demeter, Mother of Mothers, She who hears our lamentations and provides sustenance!

O Divine One, Giver of Grain, and the seeds which spring forth with new life! You, who loved Your Child beyond the fate of this world, You who walked among us, grieving, whose tears turned to the snows of the harshest winter!

O Demeter, Mother of Kore, who reared the Maiden into ripe womanhood, hear me now, if it please You, and accept my thanks and my gratitude!

You have known me in all my ways, through all my life, and beyond that which even I know!  You have received my offerings and my love, Goddess, full and glorious!

I seek to honor You now, to praise You, and to make known my humblest gratitude, for You have given me my heart’s desire, having answered my prayer for a second child!

My son, did You deliver unto me, Great Goddess, and he is as magnificent as the touch You laid upon him, causing him to grow as the grain stalks grow, til they are ready to be harvested in Your name!

By Your unending grace, may he know the Theoi all of his days, and in all of his endeavors!  May his life be one of striving for Your glory, and that of Your Divine Family!  For it is my wish to raise him in the light of the Theoi, that he may know Your presence, and be humbled by it, Great Mother!

Thank You, Demeter!  Please, accept this token of my gratitude, poured out before You in reverence!  And please, keep my son within Your sphere, loved always by the Mother of Mothers!

Praise Demeter!

Ending Family Detention

The following petition to the Gods was written for the working to end Family Detention, which is the imprisonment of immigrant mothers with young children, indefinitely, in private for-profit prison facilities in the United States, and elsewhere. There is a working scheduled to coincide with the Mysteries of Eleusis, beginning September 22, 2016. However, there will likely be another working scheduled for October. Anyone who wishes may use this petition in tandem with their own for either of the workings.

Thank you all for your interest or participation, and may we achieve our goals.

___________________________________________

Demeter, Mother of Kore, She upon whose bosom rest the children, nourished by divine gifts of sustenance in grain and fruits. She whose love warms the land in spring, and whose lamentations chill the Earth in winter, can You hear the cries of the detained mothers?

The mothers who sought nothing but an escape from the perils of conflict and the threat of starvation? The mothers seeking a new life in a new land where they might provide their children with the great bounty that is Yours to bestow?

Demeter of the richness of Earth, the most loving of Mothers, can you hear the cries of the babies locked in cells without hope, without even sufficient clothes or diapers or the many other things which bring stability and happiness to young childhood? The babies and children who have nothing and no one but their mothers, who wished to provide them a better life? The babies and the children who are forced to witness the helplessness of their mothers in the face of inescapable abuse and neglect?

Do You hear them, O Lady? Do You hear the mothers’ cries for compassion and generosity, for charity and kindness, for understanding and benevolent aid? But most of all, Great Demeter, do You hear the mothers’ voices raised in anguish at the imprisonment of their innocent offspring?

Blessed Mother, we ask that You open Your arms to these who are defenseless, these who lack the favor of the people; those people who can make a difference to end the suffering of the detained mothers and their children. We ask that You offer them your succor, keeping them close in Your power, and alleviating their suffering. May these mothers and children receive Your nourishment, and Your Divine Compassion.

O Lady, please help these who are helpless in the face of bigotry and fear. For Yours is the power to feed bodies and souls, and in Your power will these children and their mothers receive all that is needed to free them from this inhumane and illegal imprisonment.

Beloved Kore, She who dwells in the boundless sun, making the flowers bloom, do not the babies and the little children deserve to feel the bright sun upon their skin, and to be free to run in the autumn wind? Like the flowers and green growing things that You command, the little children are less healthy without Your Mother’s power and nourishment. They wither, along with their mothers. They languish in cells without due process of law.

Gentle Kore, She of kind heart, please lend whatever power You can toward the release of these innocent babies and young children, along with their mothers who sought only the betterment of their lives, and their safety, in a place of opportunity.

Please listen the mothers’ cries of desperation for freedom, those mothers who would prefer death over the continued humiliation of watching their children grow up behind bars. And if they would seek to end their lives, please stay their hands, and help Your Blessed Mother, Great Demeter, to assure them of justice, and to enfold them in Her compassionate embrace.

O Kore, O Persephone, Queen of the realms of the dead, if it be within Your power, let not another detained mother or child enter into Your presence in desperation of freedom. Instead, by Your grace, let them walk free on Earth, greeted by the sun’s nourishing light.

Bloody Ares, He who despises rapists and abusers, do You also hear the mothers’ pleas for justice? Ares of the spear and the sword, Champion of the victims, we call upon You to defend the defenseless, and to subjugate the perpetrators under Your heel.

Let not a single abusive guard or official of these private prisons be allowed to abuse or to rape again. Let justice be done, and let every last one of the abusers be caught, tried, convicted, sentenced for a fitting amount of time in accordance with the law, and brought to the end they deserve.

Let them not escape with weak sentences, and let the judges be true to the law, and also to common sense. By Your power, Lord Ares, may the mothers and their children be vindicated, and avenged.

Gloried Athena, She who is the Great Strategist among the Gods, in Your infinite wisdom, please guide us in our endeavors to end this false imprisonment, this so-called family detention, once and for all.

May You keep our minds clear upon the goal, and may we be inventive of ways in which to gain the attention of the relevant authorities. For those in power must be made to see, and to understand the grave errors that their silence has sanctioned. They must be held to account for the needless suffering which occurs in their jurisdictions, and under their watch. The powerful are not innocent. Only the children are innocent, and by extension, their mothers.

Athena, strike down the lobbyists who grovel for the money to continue this barbaric and xenophobic practice. We beseech You to lift up the voices of the activists who bring attention to these disgraceful prisons, and to magnify their voices, so that many others will hear the call to put an end to the suffering of babies and young children.

By Your power, may all those who work for change be successful in their endeavors to sway their government representatives toward humanity and good conscience. Now and for all time, may there never again be indefinitely imprisoned upon our soil, in private for-profit facilities, another man, woman or child.

Praise the Gods, those who are great and powerful!

Hail Athena, the Wise!

Hail Ares, the Just!

Hail Kore, the Benevolent!

Hail Demeter, the Compassionate, and Mother of us all!
